Saturday 21st March – walks **** - Gliieres, St. Jorioz and Semnoz – sunny periods with light snow late.

Had a good night at the Plateau Glieres – Thorens having it all to ourselves, had a relaxing start taking pics if the sun rise above the mountains opposite and read another chapter in my book, to be honest I am having trouble keeping the book in the right place for the words to focus! Then the first of the cross-country skiers arrived and the large car park quickly filled up with people making the most of the nice Saturday weather as it’s supposed to snow/rain tomorrow morning! About 30 blokes appeared to go on an overnight snowshoe expedition with a huge amount of kit to be pulled along on large sledges, they were a bit long winded getting going so we didn’t see them leave! We had our breakfast and left with the car park pretty much full and headed down the amazing windy mountain road with the long waterfall quickly coming into sight! We stopped at a small parking area just below the falls which was also full and decided to walk up to the base of the falls, you started by a mountain stream and went up some very steep steps, a popular route as it on takes an hour to reach the belvedere which is right across the top of the fall but after two hectic days of skiing we only went about half way although loads were going up including fairly small children and dogs! Waterfall selfie taken we headed back to the van and continue our journey to Annecy stopping at a Carrefour and quickly spent £70 on cake etc and topped up with diesel for the trip home! We arrived at Annecy and it was absolutely heaving, slow moving traffic and hoards of people by the Lac, so after having no luck in parking we continued to St Jorioz a spot we had camped when our boys were young and we have stayed in the camper for several nights! Things have changed with several new apartment blocks and a no motorhome sign where used to park and height restrictions on all the car parks which means we can’t get in them with the top box on! So, we ignored the no motorhome sign and parked, we took our picnic which today consisted of a baguette, brie, ham, olives, apple, cucumber, salty butter and baby tomatoes, we know how to live and set off towards the municipal beach on the edge of the beautiful Lac Annecy, over a couple of small bridges to amble along the waterside promenade, thankfully after the craziness of Annecy it was much quieter here! We found a lovely spot on a jetty opposite Talloires where we broke down the last time, we were here and watched the many paragliders thermal up really high above the water as the clouds started to build for lunch! We were joined by a pair of goosander’s, a pair of dozing grebes plus a solo winger out in the light breeze, the tourist boat made its way past and the was the odd boat including one kayak! After lunch we continued past the marina full of small anglers’ boats and spotted a large fish! The route was then blocked due to work being down so returned to the van and started the trip up another mountain road very popular with cyclists to Semnoz where we have stayed several times before, nice for both snowshoeing and skiing! On reaching the top we quickly walked over to see the snow kiters whiz back and forth, spotted a couple more paragliders and loads of people just out walking. We then found a nice spot to park with good views over snow fields to the distant mountain which were being slowing cover in cloud, we even got a little very light snow. We then enjoyed our reduced creamy cakes with a cuppa, they were delicious! I did walk back up the hill as the sky had turned red to take a couple of pics before returned to my card games in the van, then a bit later the sky burst into red so I dashed out once more and was treated to the best sunset of the year, the sky was on fire as the large orange ball slowly dropped behind the mountains just loved, brilliant end to another amazing day in the mountains, fingers crossed tomorrows rain/snow moves away quickly so we can get the snowshoes out!
